Entering the PIN code the other way around at an ATM. What happens if you enter the PIN code backwards at an ATM? Real methods of protection
If a robber unexpectedly finds you at an ATM with a card in your hand, it’s time to come to terms with it and give up all hope for a successful outcome of this meeting. But even in seemingly hopeless situations, the situation can be saved. The Banki.ru portal figured out how to prevent an attacker from getting to your savings using an ATM and your own cunning.
On the Internet you can find various tips on what combinations you need to enter on the ATM keypad in order to block the thief standing next to you from accessing the funds on your card or to call the police. However, in reality such advice turns out to be simply popular “myths”. The most common is probably the following. If you enter your PIN code in reverse at an ATM (for example, instead of 2345 enter 5432), the machine will notify the police that you are being forced to withdraw from the card. In this case, the money will be given out, but it will be impossible to take it, since a special device will clamp it halfway.
Interested in what a cardholder with a PIN code of type 1441, which cannot be reversed, should do in such a situation, the observer turned to financiers. As one would expect, bankers dispelled the myth of an inverted PIN code, unanimously declaring that if such a function could be implemented, it would be on existing Russian ATMs it simply doesn't exist. “Such “spy” technologies to combat robbers have not yet been introduced or invented,” says Vladimir Tariko, director of the bank cards department at Stroycredit Bank. “An ATM is not a ‘superbox’ for catching robbers, and therefore no such thing can happen.” Elena Bindusova, director of the payment systems department at SMP Bank, in turn, noted that such a function is not provided for in the ATM, although a similar idea can be proposed to device manufacturers.
In general, bankers say that ATMs have built-in sensors that transmit information about what is happening with the device itself, and not with people around it. “An ATM may be equipped with an alarm for the purpose of notifying the bank service (security, security) about unauthorized opening or an attempt to open the ATM, but not to warn customers about their robbery,” reports Tariko.
It is noteworthy that a reverse PIN code actually exists as a means of protecting money on a card. Its creator is Joseph Singer. The idea of a “mirror” PIN code was even patented by him in 1998, however, as far as is known, not a single one American bank was not interested in purchasing a patent.
More cunning than cunning
At the request of Banki.ru, several experts gave their advice on how to behave when meeting with intruders at an ATM. Here’s what Andrey Shakhovnin, partner of the Ligerion Group consulting company, thinks about this: “It’s better not to argue with the robber and calmly follow his instructions. Threat to threat is discord. Therefore, if you see that the threats are real, that is, your life and health are really in danger, it is better not to try to openly rebuff the attacker. In this case, it is better to protect life rather than money. Moreover, most ATMs have a limit on one-time cash withdrawals. On average, for regular cards it is about 150-200 thousand rubles per day. That is a large amount robbers will not physically be able to remove it. Since all ATMs are equipped with video recording systems, you should, if possible, try to communicate with the robber and behave in such a way that the camera can record his voice, face, and hands. You also need to try to find out and remember as much information about the robber as possible. This will help the investigation in the future. In any case, you must immediately file a police report, for which you should immediately call 02, 112, 911 and go to the nearest department.”
No matter what, you can try to outwit the robber. Thus, the SB Bank terminal device support service recommends saying goodbye to the card: inserting it into the card reader and diverting the attention of your opponents for about 30 seconds. During this time, the ATM will capture the card and neither you nor the attacker will be able to get it. The second option is even riskier - blocking your PIN by repeatedly entering it incorrectly. But here the client demonstrates his will to resist, and therefore SB Bank advises using this method only in extreme cases.
“If the card reader senses the card before, during or after entering the PIN code and at the same time for a certain time the client does not show any activity in relation to the ATM, then he “swallows” the card,” the head of the expert group explains regarding the first method banking technologies SB Bank Maxim Volkov.
The expert gives an example that if a cardholder enters the wrong PIN code three times at an ATM located in one of the SB Bank offices, the device will return the card. However, cash withdrawal transactions using a PIN code using this card will be blocked for a day. It all depends on the settings preset in the ATM.
"Simple and affordable way- enter the PIN code incorrectly several times, and after the next “unsuccessful” attempt, the card will be “destroyed” and will not go to the robber, suggests Vladimir Tariko. “Theoretically, you can always maintain the card in such a “state” that you only have to enter the wrong code once, but in practice, of course, it’s unlikely that anyone will do this.”
Also, Stroykredit Bank advises, under various pretexts and without arousing suspicion, to send an SMS message to a special service number of the bank or an SMS with a special code word. Receipt similar message will mean for special service bank that it is necessary to block the card and, for example, inform the police. “Blocking a card via a special SMS message is a special service that can be technologically implemented in a bank,” notes Tariko. “Informing the police about attempts or coercion of a client to withdraw money from his card does not work in Russian reality.”
Elena Bindusova spoke about an interesting way to resist a robber. “I heard a story about how one client in a similar situation, holding the phone in his pocket, dialed the police number and structured the dialogue with the criminal in such a way that it contained the address of what was happening. The outfit arrived quite quickly,” the expert shares.
You can also try a psychological method of influencing the thief. As it turned out, sometimes he helps too. For example, a Chinese woman surnamed Zhang got into a conversation this summer with a robber who attacked her at an ATM. She asked the attacker why he wanted to rob her, and reminded her that security cameras would record his every move. As a result, a kind-hearted Chinese woman even offered the failed thief some money, but he refused and fled the scene of a possible crime.
Last chance
If you do become a “client” of a robber, then you first need to file a police report regarding the theft. An application to the bank for the provision of video materials will be sent by the police themselves. The client can only “unofficially” find out about the availability of such materials and the details of the video shooting.
“Regarding withdrawing money from an ATM, I would frankly advise you to try not to use cash at all,” says Maxim Volkov. - Some kind of a small amount You can carry money with you, but it is better to pay by card. Moreover, now you can pay with it almost everywhere and always. Second advice: if you still need to withdraw cash, do it at the nearest office of any bank, preferably equipped with a special isolated room for an ATM. Withdraw cash in crowded, trusted places, such as shopping centers, can also be useful.”
Experts say that it is possible to return money stolen from an ATM, but they find it difficult to assess how great the chance of doing so is. “The return of money in such a situation depends on the bank,” says Bindusova. “But in any case, the police should be looking for the robbers, and the bank, in turn, will provide law enforcement agencies with maximum possible assistance so that the criminals are found and the money is returned.”
Vladimir Tariko also agrees with this position. “Returning money that was stolen (including as a result of robbery) is a standard procedure for the police after a criminal case has been initiated,” he says. - Banks have nothing to do with the direct return of money in this case. The money can only be returned by the robbers themselves if they are detained.”
To prevent theft of funds from your card, you can also insure it against fraud. This service is now offered, for example, by Alfa-Bank and Russian Standard. One of Alfa-Bank’s insurance “card” products is the “Protected Card”. It will help protect you from losses associated with fraudulent activities third parties (including their receipt of cash from an ATM from your account under threat of violence), as well as from loss or physical destruction of the card. Insurance premium bank for a “Secured Card” or “Secured Card Plus” will range from 1,200 to 4,300 rubles per year, depending on the type and status of the card. Alfa-Bank has other similar insurance offers. Using the “Protected Card” the client will be able to return from 100 thousand to 300 thousand rubles. If money was stolen from your card by withdrawing it from an ATM, you should contact the police as quickly as possible and receive a coupon notification of acceptance of the application, and then report the event to the AlfaStrakhovanie company by phone. Then, no later than three days after the incident, you need to come to one of the branches of Alfa-Bank or AlfaStrakhovanie and provide a passport and some other documents. In Russian Standard the scheme is similar. Activating the card fraud protection insurance program costs 50 rubles per month.
It should be noted that you can secure your funds in a more innovative way. Let us recall that in 2009 Sberbank together with the Inpas company launched pilot project social card in the Astrakhan region. Special bank cards issued as part of this project could be used in ATMs that read fingerprints. To carry out an operation on a card, its holder had to touch three fingers to a special screen on the ATM. It was possible to cancel the operation by applying four fingers. The fourth finger, called the “stop finger” or “alarm finger,” also helped deceive burglars. At certain points, when a bank customer placed four fingers on the ATM screen, the device showed a zero balance.
In fact, ATM manufacturers are ready to fulfill any client’s whim - the device can be “stuffed” with anything, if desired. But Russian banks, apparently, do not have it. After all, any technological addition increases the cost of an ATM, which is unprofitable for banks. Top credit organizations have a wide ATM network, and installing some kind of “panic button” on each device, reporting the fact of theft to law enforcement agencies, will cost the bank a pretty penny. Meanwhile, it is unknown whether such costs will pay off and whether such a button will be useful and necessary for customers.
In my opinion, anything can happen, it all depends on what kind of bank it is and how their security service functions. It is possible that the first time you simply will not receive money, but with repeated similar manipulations, serious problems may arise. Do you need this?
The password must be entered correctly. Any change in numbers will be considered an incorrect password. If the PIN code is entered incorrectly three times, your card will be blocked. This rule is security against robbery.
This idea has been circulating on the Internet for a long time, but, to be honest, it immediately looked like a fake. After all, an ATM is not a police station and these functions are not assigned to it.
In any case, it is difficult to imagine how an ATM would dispense money into the dispenser so that it would get stuck. We know: if you want to get money, you can easily snatch it from a soulless machine))
Of course, the ATM will react to any incorrectly entered code and will not perform the operation. And after three times, if you enter it incorrectly, the card is usually blocked.
This myth, which has filled the Internet with a viral effect, should not be believed. There is no described anti-robbery feature for ATMs.
A very interesting feature. They also say that if you hit an ATM with a sledgehammer, it will call the police.
It will be like this:
If you enter your PIN incorrectly three times, you will lose the right to use your card and will have to contact the bank. Perhaps you will be forced to pay the fine that Lenusya is talking about, but even if not, imagine what benefits this promises to the bankers: they will get quite enough just by changing cards.
Now answer a simple question - who could put such information on the network?
Once there was a case where I mistakenly entered the wrong password three times, then the ATM ate the card, three days later I could pick up my card, they didn’t change it for me, they just gave it to me after presenting my passport.
So I draw conclusions on your question about entering the pin three times in reverse, after three attempts your card will be eaten by an ATM and that’s it!
Nothing will happen, and if you enter it 3 times, the card will be blocked
All this is nonsense! Whatever is there, you must dial, otherwise after 3 times the dialing error will be blocked!
I read on the website that if you stole a card (or found it), supposedly you can find the pin. To do this, you pierce the card (just not where the strip goes), stick it in, press any button and hold the button for a long time (you also hold the card by the thread), then supposedly 10 PINs will appear on the screen and you choose from them. One of the 10 will probably do (this way you will pocket the money and get rich =)). But, to be honest, I don’t believe in this nonsense and I don’t advise you to try it! I just wrote this as an example in response to the question of what FAKE I came across! So are you really going to try to change your PIN after this?
This is all nonsense!
I entered my wife’s PIN the other way around three times - only the card was blocked.
If you experiment with the PIN code for a long time, the ATM will swallow your card, you will have to call, explain, come to the branch, write an application, wait for the card to be taken out of the ATM. All this can leave you without cash for some time.
The ATM through which I receive my pension blocks the card even after a one-time incorrectly entered PIN code, however, you can immediately call the support service and they will unblock the card.
You will see a message on the ATM screen stating that the PIN code was entered incorrectly. If you do this three times, your card will be blocked, you will have to live temporarily without money until it is released new map. Nothing else will happen.
Yes, I also saw this on TV, but I think that if everyone starts checking their cards at ATMs, there will be a lot of false calls. And for a false call they can be fined. Maybe they are telling this just to scare the robbers?
Appearance bank cards increased the safety of their users. If previously people had to carry cash with them, which could be stolen or taken away, then the money on a bank card is protected by a PIN code, known only to the owner himself.
However, this, of course, did not bring complete security, because crime has not disappeared from the streets.
In crime reports, stories sometimes appear about how a robber, threatening with a pistol or knife, forces the victim to approach an ATM, independently withdraw money from the card and give it to the robber himself. Such cases do not happen very often, but there is always a risk.
For this reason, many people are interested in the question: is it true that if you dial your PIN code backwards at an ATM, the police will come?
Unfortunately, this is wrong. Some bank clients think that if they insert their card into an ATM and rearrange the numbers in their PIN (for example, instead of 7210, dial 0127), the ATM will transmit an alarm to the bank, and they, in turn, will send the police to the address of the incident. So it's just a myth.
The first ATMs in Western countries appeared a long time ago, back in the 70s. Then banks began to issue credit cards, which at some point began to be protected using a PIN - secret dialing of numbers without entering which a person will not be able to withdraw money from the card.
At some point things began to happen cases of street robberies, during which the criminals, not finding cash on the victim, could actually force him to withdraw money from an ATM and give it to them. It is quite possible that it was then that individual banks proposed introducing such a method to protect their clients. However, in practice this idea was never implemented.
Therefore, if you enter your PIN incorrectly at an ATM (by any means), nothing will happen– the ATM will simply display a message stating that the entered PIN code is incorrect and will ask you to enter it again. After three or five unsuccessful attempts, the card will be blocked and it will become impossible to withdraw money. However, even this situation will not trigger the alarm.
Banks have it completely logical explanation. Firstly, the bank and the police are two different structures. Even if we assume that somehow the bank learned about the alarming situation, it will take some time to dispatch the police to the address.
Criminals most often act very quickly - in seconds they force the victim to do something, take away everything valuable from her and immediately disappear. For this reason, the police simply will not physically have time to arrive at the scene of the incident.
Secondly, people sometimes forget or numbers are confused your PIN code. In addition, in a state of intoxication or for the sake of pranks, many people can type their code incorrectly as a joke. Thus, the police may simply be overwhelmed with similar false calls.
Well, besides, according to the myth, if you dial the PIN code backwards, then the bank will “swallow” your card. In fact, this situation is more than dangerous for the victim herself, because in this way the criminals would immediately understand that they had been deceived and could easily injure or even kill the intractable victims.
Moreover, in reality, criminals very rarely force victims to go with them to the ATM. Most often, robber attacks occur in dark, deserted places, while ATMs are usually illuminated with lights and have built-in video cameras.
Therefore, it is much easier for robbers take money from the victim(even if there are few of them) cellular telephone, other valuables and hide and throw away the card (perhaps before that you tried to pay with it in the nearest store). Of course, it is also possible to attack directly near an ATM, but in this case, most likely, the criminals will simply wait until the victim withdraws it herself the required amount, and only then they will approach her with threats.
Therefore, the myth that if you enter the PIN code from your credit card on the contrary, the police will come - not true. You should not count on such a possibility, and you should protect yourself from a possible attack in other ways.
First of all, you should avoid solo visits to sparsely populated and dark places. This is where danger most often lurks. Moreover, never PIN code cannot be written down from your card on it or on a piece of paper that lies nearby - you should always keep such information in your head. If trouble does happen and they persistently demand that you give money, especially at gunpoint - It is best to comply with the demands of the criminals.
Losing money is always a pity and a shame, but life and health are more important in any case. For this reason, in such situations it is better to do everything that the criminals demand, and already after being safe– call the police for help and try to help them find the intruders as much as possible.
When you earn money, the question is always how best to save it. As Alexander the Great used to say: “It’s not difficult to conquer a city, but it’s difficult to preserve what you’ve conquered.”
I have already been sent letters several times in which people said that if suddenly, God forbid, they decided to rob you at an ATM, then you should enter your PIN code backwards, and the police will come immediately.
Well, I didn’t believe it at all, but there was no way to prove it. The fact is that here in the USA, cash is completely out of use. I don’t even remember the last time I had to not only withdraw money from my account at an ATM, but even use cash at all.
In my mind I knew it was fake. Even take the simplest case, when your PIN code is like an inversion, a palindrome. Well, that is, for example: 4224. And how can you type it the other way around?
But today I came across a useful article that explains everything. Read it, there is a lot of useful information there. In particular, how to really save money if you use an ATM.
Well, there’s also something about the notorious pin code. Of course, this is all complete bullshit. Where such rumors come from is completely unclear to me.
Recently in in social networks A version of the new ATM protection is being actively discussed. Internet users claim that, for example, by typing a certain combination of numbers or entering your own PIN code in reverse order, you can call the police.
However banking specialists deny this information. “The configuration of the ATM itself does not include such functions,” explained Oleg Sannikov, head of the settlement and issue support department of Rosenergobank. — As a rule, ATMs are equipped with various security systems. This could be a video surveillance system, various sensors that respond to movement, impact, or hacking, which are triggered if the device is damaged.”
There are a lot of options, and the settings depend on the customer’s agreements and the capabilities of the supplier. In other words, it is impossible to guess whether the ATM has a security system, what exactly it will trigger, and who will come when called - the police or representatives of a private security agency. The banks themselves, of course, prefer not to disclose such information.
But cases of fraud with bank cards is becoming more and more, and we need to protect ourselves ourselves. One of the most common ways to withdraw money from the owner’s account payment card– this is skimming.
In this case, attackers create a duplicate plastic card its victim using special devices that are attached directly to the ATM. The scheme is as follows: scammers apply a skimming device to the place where a plastic card is accepted. Here, look at the picture what it looks like. This includes skimming and a fake keyboard.
