Petrograd side house with towers. The construction of towers in the history of construction. Ready-made tower-house project
The architectural style is quite varied. Sometimes you can bring to life the most unusual idea of the master. For example, make a house in a water tower or build a simple one.

Project of a large house with several towers of different shapes
Important. Some architects create a glass tower. This unusual approach is an innovation in construction.
Square and rectangular shapes are more practical. They accommodate sleeping or living rooms, as well as study rooms.
The height of the tower may correspond to the height of the house, or it may be less.
The so-called mini tower. It all depends on the designer's idea.
Their number in a building can be unlimited. The most popular project is a house with two towers.
Stages of erection of a structure with towers
First, everything must correspond to such a house. It is best to use the services of a landscape designer who will arrange the site. Secondly, the construction site should not be small. Such a house is characterized by the presence of a large free area around it. Otherwise, a cottage or any other building will simply clutter up the entire space.

Construction and building features
On the facade from the side of Lev Tolstoy Street, there are two bay windows. The design of this part of the building with displaced rows of windows is due to the fact that from this side the existing five-storey building was included in the new building, which also retained a number of design elements: "Romanesque" windows in the courtyard, cast railings and staircase doors.
For all its picturesqueness, the building was built with an increased margin of safety. The floor slabs carried custom-made multi-span I-beams. The engineering equipment of the house corresponded to the highest standards of that time: the apartments had gas stoves, recessed into the floor of the bath, heaters for drying towels, and built-in wardrobes. There was a garage in the courtyard of the building. The interior layout, made by Rosenstein, was compact.
The construction was completed in 1915.
The "House with Towers" became the last in time and the first in importance building on the new section of Bolshoy Prospekt. The powerful dominant feature of Lev Tolstoy Square has acquired the meaning of one of the symbols of the Petrograd side.
Notable residents and institutions
V House with towers lived at different times: one of the authors of the project, the architect Belogrud (in 1914), the writer Leonid Andreev (in 1915), the singer Alexander Davydov (in 1914-1917, on the 4th floor), the father of Z.A. Russian Tamara Davydova.
In the early 1920s. on the first floor of the "House with Towers" from the side of the square settled the 5th registered cash office of the Narkomfin, later - the savings bank, then - the branch of Sberbank, since February 1, 2013 in these premises is the St. Petersburg theater "Russian Entreprise" named after Andrei Mironov, having started to the restoration of the premises in disrepair, where Sberbank was previously located.
Also on the first floor, but on the side of Bolshoy Prospekt, there was a cinema with 248 seats (since 1921, according to other sources since 1915), called first "Elite", then "Competitor", since 1925 - "Rezets", and since 1930 of the year - "Ars". In 1972, it was closed, and the premises were transferred to the studio of the Leningrad Television, which was located here until 1978. After the reconstruction, carried out by the architects of the Institute Giproteatr B. G. Ustinov and L. Travin and engineer M. B. Mednik at the beginning of 1978, the premises of the cinema were converted into a theater. A special place in the design was occupied by graceful cast-iron gratings, chandeliers, frames and tables of the Kasli casting. On September 12, 1985, this room was occupied by the Experiment Theater of Miniatures, opening its seventh season here.

Excerpt from the Tower House
“I read our protest about the Oldenburg case and was surprised at the poor wording of this note,” said Count Rostopchin, in the careless tone of a man judging the case well known to him.Pierre looked at Rostopchin with naive surprise, not understanding why he was worried about the bad edition of the note.
“Isn't it all the same how the note is written, Count? - he said, - if its content is strong.
- Mon cher, avec nos 500 mille hommes de troupes, il serait facile d "avoir un beau style, [My dear, with our 500 thousand troops, it seems easy to express myself in a good style,] - said Count Rostopchin. Pierre understood why Count Rostopchin was worried about the editing of the note.
- It seems that the scribblers are quite divorced, - said the old prince: - they write everything in Petersburg, not only notes, - they write new laws. My Andryusha wrote a whole lot of laws there for Russia. Today they write everything! And he laughed unnaturally.
The conversation fell silent for a minute; the old general drew attention to himself by clearing his throat.
- Did you deign to hear about the latest event at the show in St. Petersburg? how the new French envoy showed himself!
- What? Yes, I heard something; he said something awkwardly in front of His Majesty.
“His Majesty drew his attention to the grenadier division and the ceremonial march,” the general continued, “and as if the envoy had not paid any attention and as if he allowed himself to say that we in France do not pay attention to such trifles. The Emperor did not deign to say anything. At the next review, they say, the emperor never deigned to turn to him.
Everyone fell silent: this fact, which was personally related to the sovereign, could not be assessed.
- Daring! - said the prince. - Do you know Metivier? I drove him out of me today. He was here, they let me in, no matter how I asked not to let anyone in, ”said the prince, glancing angrily at his daughter. And he related his entire conversation with the French doctor and the reasons why he was convinced that Metivier was a spy. Although these reasons were very insufficient and not clear, no one objected.
Champagne was served over the roast. The guests rose from their seats, congratulating the old prince. Princess Marya also went up to him.
He looked at her with cold, angry eyes and offered her a wrinkled, shaved cheek. The whole expression on his face told her that he had not forgotten the morning conversation, that his decision remained in force, and that it was only thanks to the presence of the guests that he did not tell her this now.
When we went into the living room for coffee, the old men sat down together.
Prince Nikolai Andreevich became more lively and expressed his way of thinking about the impending war.
He said that our wars with Bonaparte would be unhappy as long as we were looking for alliances with the Germans and would meddle in European affairs, into which the Peace of Tilsit had drawn us. We did not have to fight for Austria or against Austria. Our policy is all in the east, but with regard to Bonaparte, there is one thing - armament on the border and firmness in politics, and he will never dare to cross the Russian border, as in the seventh year.
- And where are we, prince, to fight the French! - said Count Rostopchin. - Can we take up arms against our teachers and gods? Look at our youth, look at our ladies. Our gods are French, our kingdom of heaven is Paris.
He began to speak louder, obviously so that everyone could hear him. - Costumes are French, thoughts are French, feelings are French! You have kicked Metivier out in the closet, because he is a Frenchman and a scoundrel, and our ladies crawl after him. Yesterday I was at the evening, so out of five ladies, three are Catholics and, with the permission of the Pope, they sew on canvas on Sunday. And they themselves are sitting almost naked, like the signs of trade baths, if I may say so. Oh, look at our youth, prince, would take the old club of Peter the Great from the Cabinet of Curiosities, but in Russian would break off the sides, all the nonsense would jump off!
Everyone fell silent. The old prince looked at Rostopchin with a smile on his face and shook his head approvingly.
“Well, goodbye, your Excellency, do not be ill,” said Rostopchin, rising with his characteristic swift movements and stretching out his hand to the prince.
- Farewell, my dear, - gusli, I will always listen to him! - said the old prince, holding his hand and turning his cheek to him for a kiss. Others rose with Rostopchin.
Princess Marya, sitting in the drawing-room and listening to these rumors and gossips of the old people, understood nothing of what she had heard; she only wondered if all the guests were noticing her father's hostility towards her. She did not even notice the special attention and courtesies that Drubetskoy, who had already been in their house for the third time, showed her throughout this dinner.
Princess Marya, with an absent-minded, questioning glance, turned to Pierre, who, the last of the guests, with a hat in his hand and a smile on his face, approached her after the prince had gone out, and they remained alone in the drawing-room.
- Can I still sit? - he said, his fat body lying in an armchair next to Princess Marya.
“Oh yes,” she said. "Did you notice anything?" said her look.
Pierre was in a pleasant after dinner state of mind. He looked in front of him and smiled softly.
- How long have you known this young man, princess? - he said.
- What?
- Drubetskoy?
- No, recently ...
- What do you like him?
- Yes, he is a pleasant young man ... Why are you asking me this? - said Princess Marya, continuing to think about her morning conversation with her father.
- Because I made an observation - a young man usually comes from St. Petersburg to Moscow on vacation only with the aim of marrying a rich bride.
- You made this observation! - said Princess Marya.
“Yes,” Pierre continued with a smile, “and this young man now behaves in such a way that where there are rich brides, there he is. I read it like a book. He is now undecided who to attack him: you or mademoiselle Julie Karagin. Il est tres assidu aupres d "elle. [He is very considerate of her.]
- Does he go to them?
- Very often. And do you know a new way of courting? - Pierre said with a cheerful smile, apparently being in that cheerful spirit of good-natured mockery for which he so often reproached himself in his diary.
“No,” said Princess Marya.
- Now, to please the Moscow girls - il faut etre melancolique. Et il est tres melancolique aupres de m lle Karagin, [you have to be melancholic. And he is very melancholy with m elle Karagin,] - said Pierre.
- Vraiment? [Right?] - said Princess Marya, looking into Pierre's kind face and never ceasing to think about her grief. “It would be easier for me, she thought, if I decided to believe everything I feel to someone. And I would like to tell Pierre everything. He is so kind and noble. It would be easier for me. He would give me advice! "
- Would you marry him? - asked Pierre.
“Oh, my God, Count, there are such moments that I would go for anyone,” Princess Marya suddenly said, unexpectedly for herself, with tears in her voice. - Oh, how hard it is to love a loved one and feel that ... nothing (she continued in a trembling voice), you can do for him except grief, when you know that you cannot change it. Then one thing is to leave, but where should I go? ...
- What are you, what is wrong with you, princess?
But the princess, without finishing, burst into tears.
“I don’t know what’s the matter with me today. Don't listen to me, forget what I told you.
All Pierre's gaiety disappeared. He anxiously questioned the princess, asked her to express everything, to trust him with her grief; but she only repeated that she was asking him to forget what she had said, that she did not remember what she had said, and that she had no grief, except that which he knew - grief that the marriage of Prince Andrey threatened to embroil her father with son.
- Have you heard about the Rostovs? She asked to change the conversation. - I was told that they will soon be. I also wait for Andre every day. I would like them to see each other here.
- And how does he look at this case now? - asked Pierre, by he meaning the old prince. Princess Marya shook her head.
- But what to do? Only a few months remain until a year. And it can't be. I would only wish to save my brother from the first minutes. I wish they would come sooner. I hope to get along with her. You have known them for a long time, - said Princess Marya, - tell me, honestly, the whole truth, who is this girl and how do you find her? But the whole truth; because, you know, Andrei risks so much, doing it against his father's will, that I would like to know ...
An obscure instinct told Pierre that in these reservations and repeated requests to tell the whole truth, Princess Marya's hostility towards her future daughter-in-law was expressed, that she wanted Pierre not to approve of Prince Andrew's choice; but Pierre said what he felt rather than thought.
“I don’t know how to answer your question,” he said, blushing, not knowing why. - I absolutely do not know what kind of girl she is; I can’t analyze it in any way. She is charming. And why, I don't know: that's all that can be said about her. - Princess Marya sighed and the expression on her face said: "Yes, I expected this and was afraid."
- Is she smart? - asked Princess Marya. Pierre thought about it.
“I think not,” he said, “but yes, by the way. She does not deign to be smart ... No, she is charming, and nothing more. Princess Marya again shook her head disapprovingly.
An example of a combination of originality architectural solutions while following classic traditions - this is a project of a house with turrets. The building built on its basis is capable of realizing the wildest dreams of the owner. At the same time, the level of modern building technologies makes it possible to reproduce the medieval castle style at a new, higher level.
Project No. 10-36 | Project No. 49-85 | Project No. 31-37 |
Features of projects of houses with turrets
Projects of houses with a tower have a number of features:
- unusual appearance of the building in the "retro" style;
- reconstruction of individual elements of famous historical buildings and traditions of different eras;
- original functional use of the structure and internal space of the tower;
- architectural and decorative playing with the parts of the building inherent in a specific historical time:
- spiral staircase;
- loopholes on the tower;
- spire, etc .;
- use in the construction and decoration of the cottage of traditional building materials:
- decorative or natural stone;
- ceramic bricks;
- tiles or materials imitating it.
The main part of the structures under consideration is the tower. It can be rectangular or square, but the round design is considered the classic option. The latter version of the tower is less practical and technologically more complex, however, it best suits the style of a country cottage. At the same time, in different projects, the tower extends beyond the contours of the building or is "recessed" in it.
Examples of
A typical example of a house with a turret is project No. 34-56... The dominant architectural element is the classic round tower that rises above the building. It is taken out of the contours of the cottage both in horizontal and vertical projections. From a functional point of view, its use is traditional - there is a spiral staircase inside.
Project No. 34-56. Stone and brick cottageAnother characteristic feature of tower projects is the use of facing bricks and artificial stone for finishing. Moreover, the latter gives originality to the facade of a country building, thanks to its use in facing the columns and the porch. The highlight of the project is a room with panoramic windows located in the upper part of the tower. Considering its location, in fact, on the 4th floor, there is a beautiful view of the surroundings from there.
Another example of the use of a tower in the architecture of a private cottage is project No. 47-47... The structure of the tower also rises above the building, but is inscribed in its outline. Both decorative stone and brick are used in the decoration. An important architectural element is the original green color of the roof covering made of tiles that imitate natural. The location of the tower in relation to other structures of the structure is standard angular.
Project No. 47-47. House with a green red brick roofThe use of a square tower is shown in the project of a country cottage №50-23 ... Its structure is almost completely recessed into the building, but it rises above it. The artificial stone finish on the entire height of the tower accentuates the attention, further highlighting the original architectural element. On the top floor of the tower, there is a room with large windows.
Since the middle of the 19th century, the site where the Rosenstein house is located today belonged to various owners. For example, a velodrome was built here in 1895, where up to ten thousand people came during the days of big competitions. In winter, this site housed the Northern Skating Rink, on the ice of which on March 8, 1898, the first Russian field hockey match took place.
The Rosenstein House or “The House with Towers” played a decisive role in the architectural design of Leo Tolstoy Square. The building was built in 1913-1915. Since 1898, this place has been the home of a Prussian citizen, owner of a Dutch cocoa warehouse, S. Felkel. In 1912, the engineer and architect K. Rosenstein received permission to build a house on this site. Initially, he began construction according to his own design, but, not having the proper experience, he was forced to invite the architect A. Belogrud for cooperation, who already had several small buildings under his belt. Belohrud set to work when he had at his disposal the skeleton of a building unfinished by Rosenstein with gazebos in the corners. Belohrud was fond of medieval architecture, so he turned the belvederes in the corners of the building, taken out to the square, into real towers, similar to the towers of Maxtoke Castle in the English county of Warwickshire.
During the construction of the building, much attention was paid to drawing the details of the facade - balconies, windows, pointed arches. Window openings of the house are varied: round, semicircular, rectangular, double semicircular, separated by thin columns. Building details are underlined brown, while the walls of the house are painted yellow-gray. In the wall of one of the towers, Belogrud placed a decorative dial with the signs of the zodiac. The interior furnishings of the house were not inferior to its picturesqueness. So, in the apartments there were: gas stoves, recessed into the floor of the bath, heaters for drying towels, built-in wardrobes; there was also a garage in the yard. The House with Towers is essentially the only major work of a talented and outstanding architect. A. Belogrud himself, writer L.N. Andreev, singer A.M. Davydov.
After the revolution, starting in 1921, on the first floor of the "Houses with towers" were located, replacing each other, the cinemas "Elite", "Competitor", "Rezets", "ARS". In the 50s, the building was declared an architectural monument and taken under state protection... In 1978, the lower floor of the house was converted into a theater room and in 1985 the Experiment Theater with an auditorium for 220 people was located here. Since October 17, 1996, the Andrei Mironov Russian Entreprise theater has been housed and opened in the premises of the former cinema.
The tower house fascinates with its peculiarity, and, perhaps, today its project is as popular as it was during the Middle Ages. Such a house can be made in different variations. This is a large castle in the style of fearless knights and fiery ladies, and classic house with towers, and a stylish solution aristocratic mansion... But in any case, the project of the tower house will meet the requirements of modernity and comfort.
The main feature of the elegant tower house is a semicircular structure topped with a cone-shaped one with a spire. A house like this is filled architectural elements, emphasizing the high status of their owners, their excellent taste. It is impossible to pass by such a castle and not pay attention to it. It is full of character and personality that every detail of the building speaks of.
The construction of towers in the history of construction
The tower is a narrow, elongated structure, crowned with a spire. It can be either an individual building or an element of a complex structure. They have been used in construction for many centuries in a row. The oldest examples of the construction of cone-shaped structures are the towers of Egyptian fortresses. Such buildings were erected in a rectangular shape and ended with a kind of battlements. Unfortunately, such architectural phenomena have disappeared from the face of the earth, remained only in ancient legends and manuscripts.
The ancient fortress consisted of walls and towers attached to them. They were used in the Roman Empire and Byzantium. Later, the Europeans also borrowed the design, using it for the construction of places of detention.
Domestic architecture did not stand aside either. To this day, elements of fortresses with towers, which were built according to the Byzantine type, have survived.
In the Middle Ages, when there was a need to defend against the enemy, the towers began to be attached to massive brick spiritual structures. They were used as observation posts and shelters for children and women. The Savior Cathedral in Chernigov, cathedrals in Novgorod and others are excellent proofs of this.
Antique art complemented the towers for hours... It was thanks to antiquity that they appeared on houses, train stations, supplemented by clocks. They are still very popular nowadays. They are used in the construction of lighthouses, water reservoirs, for astronomical research. But the tower construction technology is especially in demand. Projects with photos allow you to visually represent the future construction of a house with towers. The most famous object of tower construction is the Eiffel Tower, which is 300 meters high.
Modern castle: style and nobility
The project of a house with a tower, erected in the form of an old medieval castle, is able to satisfy all the requirements of a modern person. Projects modern houses may differ significantly from each other, but they have the same advantages:
- unusual design solution for construction of an individual house meeting the needs of a modern person;
- exquisite stylistic direction, which is conveyed in every element of the structure and external design;
- the possibility of building with different parameters. You can build a house of different sizes and shapes;
- high functionality.
The tower, attached to the house, serves as a living quarters. It is just as comfortable and in most cases allows for individual design.
Tower construction options
Structurally, it can be erected:
- round, created as a living room. Very often it is in them that they mount, leading to the upper floor or. The walls of such a tower are crowned with small window openings. A new trend in the construction of houses is the construction of glass towers. This direction is just emerging, gaining more and more demand;
- square, which is created as a bedroom or study. In some projects, a square tower is used as a living room;
- rectangular, which can perform the same functions as a square tower.
They can be built of different heights and be smaller than the building or have the same height with it. The number can also be unlimited, but most often there are houses with two towers.
Small round tower suitable only for an observation room
Building a house with towers
When building a house in the style of an ancient castle, you should use the services of a landscape designer, because the plot should be decorated in the same style. In addition, a castle-shaped house requires free space... If this feature is not taken into account, the castle will simply clutter up the site. An incorrectly defined construction site can distort the future building beyond recognition.
After the construction site is determined, you can proceed to creating project documentation... Of course, you can create a project yourself. But it is still worth using the services of professionals who have the necessary knowledge and skills. And only after the approval of the project, you can start building a private house.
Ready-made tower-house project
The house built according to such a project will become the pride of its owners. Its appearance is intriguing and mesmerizing, because the house exactly matches outward appearance medieval castles, perhaps smaller. The size of the building can be different in accordance with the availability of free space on the site.
Experts do not recommend building more than 4 towers during the construction of the castle, although their number can be any. At a large number towers, the building often looks rude and unattractive. Structurally, a house can consist of different forms and elements. The combination of a semicircle, a rectangle allows you to create a beautiful solution.
But in any case, the design should be entrusted to a specialist. Today special companies offer owners land plots ready-made projects that are selected depending on:
- ;
- the size of the land plot;
- the needs and desires of the customer;
- cost.
High level professionals will offer the best way construction, which will take into account entrance area and living room, kitchen area., utility rooms, bedrooms,. The location of these zones is compiled depending on the design capabilities and desires of everyone who will live in the house.
